The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is located in the Horn of Africa. It shares a border with Eritrea, Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya and Somalia. Apart from a 5-year occupation by Mussolini’s Italy, Ethiopia has never been colonised. With over 102 million inhabitants, Ethiopia is the 2ndmost populous country in Africa (after Nigeria). Ethiopia has suffered periods of extreme droughts and famines as well as a 30-year war with Eritrea. Ethiopia’s economy experienced strong, growth from 2005/06 to 2015/16. Growth and Transformation Plan ll (GTP ll)
The main challenges for Ethiopia are sustaining its positive economic growth and accelerating poverty reduction, which requires significant progress in job creation as well as improved governance. The government is already devoting a very high share of its budget to pro-poor programs and investments.
The major objective of GTP II is to serve as a spring-board towards realizing the national vision of becoming a low middle-income country by 2025. This is to be achieved through sustaining rapid, broad-based and inclusive economic growth, which accelerates economic transformation.
