The Union of the Comoros is an archipelago made up of 3 islands. It is situated in the Indian Ocean north west of Madagascar. The descendants of Arab traders, Malay immigrants and African peoples make up the islands’ ethnic mix. Since achieving its independence, the country has experienced 20 military coups with various heads of state assassinated.  Poverty is rife as is malnutrition and infant mortality.

The economic outlook is positive with growth expected to increase slightly owing to transfers from the diaspora and public investment in infrastructure. Opportunities to develop the private sector exist in particular, the hotel and air transport sectors are particularly attractive to investors.
